One of the world’s great singers, Dame Sarah Connolly has enjoyed a career at the top level of vocal performance on the stage and the concert platform for many years, and her repertoire is vast. She returns to Pembroke College to perform a new cycle written for her and Joseph Middleton by Errollyn Wallen, recently commissioned by Leeds Lieder. The centrepiece of their recital is Mahler’s spiritual and often light-filled Kindertotenlieder. Connolly and Middleton have recently committed these songs to disc, the Times commenting:
“Sarah Connolly singing Mahler: that’s nothing surprising in itself, for Britain’s eminent mezzo-soprano, by now almost a national treasure, has been eloquently exploring the composter’s vocal repertoire for some time…whatever she sings, you get singing straight from the heart. You also get beautifully nuanced piano playing from Middleton, a musician seemingly incapable of misjudging the careful balancing act necessary when accompanying lieder.”
