Nestled by the banks of the Great Ouse, and less than half an hour from the busy towns of Cambridge, Huntingdon and St Ives, the reserve stands at one end of a string of wetlands that run for 25 miles along the Great Ouse floodplain including our Ouse Fen and Ouse Washes reserves. Fen Drayton Lakes itself began life as a flooded sand and gravel quarry and since the RSPB acquired it we’ve been working hard to transform the lakes and meadows into an even better home for nature and a great place to visit.
We’re open all year round and with so many lakes and 10 miles of trails to explore, there is always something new to experience. You shouldn’t miss the majestic mute swans and the wealth of waterbirds, but you’ll need to look a little harder to see the many dragonflies and damselflies with which the reserve abounds. With a backdrop of lakes, lush, green meadows and the wooded fringes of the river valley isn’t it time to get closer to nature?
The Guided Busway is a great way to visit via our dedicated bus stop or why not come by bike using the National Cycle Path. To plan your visit follow;

Why not join one of our other special activities like a willow weaving workshop or come along for one of our regular guided walks. Or how about getting back to nature this year by booking ‘Wild(ish) Camping’ at our Discovery Zone – a unique opportunity for organised groups of up to 30 of any age to camp on the edge of Ferry Lagoon.
